Melanated Mondays

Melanated Mondays

Every 3rd Monday From the Comfort of Your Home.

What is Melanated Mondays?
A Black-ass good time.
Okay, but seriously this time: Each month, Black Revolutionary Theatre Workshop curates a selection of new works by the hottest up-and-coming Black writers around a new theme. On the 3rd Monday of each month, BRTW’s ensemble brings these pieces to life and facilitates a conversation with the audience about the underlying societal issues highlighted in the pieces and potential solutions to those challenges. We partner with organizers, educators, and organizations to share key avenues of civic engagement we all can undertake to make our communities more just and equitable.

Submit Your Writing

Are you interested in sharing your work during an upcoming Melanated Monday? Before submitting, please review the checklist below:

  • The work must be by a Black writer/ Black writing team
  • The work explicitly impacts Black people
  • The work deals with an aspect of social justice
  • The work fits within that month’s theme or genre

While Black Revolutionary Theatre Workshop is predominately dedicated to theatre, we also accept poetry, short story, and screenplay submissions. Generally, we encourage submissions of no more than 20 minutes in length but are open to promoting longer works from time to time. While your submission does not have to be a completely polished work, it should be ready to be shared with an audience.

Melanated Mondays is supported, in part, by the Black Arts Futures Fund and A.R.T./New York Relief Fund for NYC Small Theatres. It is also sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.

Thanks to Brendan Bradley and Mozilla, BRTW will be holding Melanated Mondays in a 3D virtual theatre powered by Mozilla Hubs. The first 24 people to RSVP to watch Melanated Mondays live will be able to join the event live via VR headset, browser, or mobile and experience Melanated Mondays in a 3D immersive world. Most importantly, you’ll be able to “sit” your avatar down amongst your community members and share in the Melanated Mondays community conversation in the closest digital approximation to the engagement we all enjoyed through February 2020.
